Chrome… who cares !?

Who cares about Chrome.

I must be one of the few very web developers around that didn’t bother to install Chrome.

Why? The answer is simple. Who cares?
As long as Internet Explorer 6.0 still has 25% market share, Chrome will be the next odd-ball sitting next to Opera and Safari.

Don’t get me wrong. I do care! But as tech person. I love the work and effort Google, Mozilla and Apple are doing with optimizing their javascript engines. WEBKit, V8, squirrelfish, you name it.  I love to read the new advancements they make. How they vaporize Internet Explorer results but then again…

25% is still using Internet Explorer 6.0.

To put it in perspective. Internet Explorer 8.0 is coming out soon. And 25% of the people still browse with the default browser delivered with their Windows XP back in 2001.  Yes 2001, 8 years ago. That’s in the middle of the big internet 1.0 bubble.

The problem is: only we techies care. And most of us techies completely ignore the fact that nowadays the ‘technical challenged’ people are the majority of the internet users. Oh yes, during their ‘browser experience sessions’ they get errors,  pages load slow,  they click ‘Yes’ on everything, they probably have a zillions Active X components installed next to the 4 different versions of Adobe reader and a dozen toolbars that will leave their browser with a >5 minute start-up time. But they don’t care. They don’t share our love for letting it all run clean and smoothly.

And don’t think for a minute that these people are less intelligent . As a consultant I see respectable CEO’s, people with MBA’s and PhD’s enter a URL in the google search box followed by a click on ‘search’ button. Tell them about the browser’s address bar and they look at you as a deer in the headlights.

You would be amazed how many people , while using Outlook, enter the name of their contact in the TO box and the actual email in the CC box.

And above all they don’t care… And as long as they don’t upgrade their PC’s, they will keep on using Internet Explorer 6.0. In the meanwhile Chrome and Firefox will conquer our hearts and the louder we shout about the web 2.0 advancements and new javascript engines. These deers will look back at us with an even dumber face than before.
